How much do pools cost?

Every situation is different so it’s not an easy question to answer. An entry level pool with minimal options might come in under $50,000 while a fully custom, Gunite pool with Artisan tile, Natural Stone coping and Designer interior plaster will be double the cost and then some. Gunite pools are our specialty and we have built fabulous ones for discriminating clients. In either case, water features, landscaping, fencing and decking also play a part in the cost and should be factored into your budget.

What is the difference between a vinyl lined pool and a Gunite pool?

A vinyl pool is constructed with a set of thin wall panels that support a plastic lining and that lining actually holds the water. These pools are available in a wide variety of shapes and the liners have patterns printed on them to imitate the look of ceramic tiles and pool plaster. The liners will usually last several years before needing to be replaced. Be sure you ask about the liner warranty – what it really means.

Gunite pools are built using reinforced concrete and with a typical Benson pool we expect a lifespan of well over 100 years. With Gunite, any shape or size can be achieved with sharp edges, smooth flowing lines or a combination of those. Beautiful, natural stone or precast concrete coping is applied on the pool edge followed by real glass or ceramic tile at the water line. The interior finish is a special pool plaster that come in a wide array of colours and styles…and never needs painting. Interior benches, swim-outs, changeable mood lighting and ceramic tile dolphins are available to top off your pool environment. Our attention to detail will make this an art piece – great swimming and even better aesthetics, lasting for several lifetimes.

One of our exceptional pools is at 24 Sussex Drive, built for Pierre Trudeau – perhaps his grandchildren will be able to swim there.

How long does it take to build a Gunite pool?

Allow about 3 weeks to install the concrete shell before the sidewalk / decking can be started. Depending on the extent of the job, this can add another few weeks or in some cases with significant landscaping work, months before the entire pool area is ready.

We want a pool but where do we start?

Planning is a key to a successful, on budget project. Look at your yard and imagine what it will look like with a pool, patio and BBQ. Decide on what your “pool lifestyle” will be….quiet enjoyment, lots of action with kids, entertaining and pool parties, or mostly exercise. These will influence your choices for the layout. Measure your yard to see how much space you have to work with – and what size the pool will be. Once you have the basics, start visiting friends with pools, look at magazines and start talking to several pool builders. While Benson Pools does not specialize in vinyl liner pools, we do understand them and will be glad to either build you a Gunite pool or direct you to the solution that is right for you.
