When Should I Open My Pool?

May 6, 2023 | Pool

It might feel a bit too early to start thinking about opening up your pool when there are still signs of winter around. But this is when many pool owners begin to plan out their spring and summer seasons so they can maximize the amount of time they have to enjoy it. If you’re wondering when you should open your pool, here are some tips to remember.

Aim for the Beginning of May

Usually, the beginning of May is when the weather begins to warm up enough to start the pool opening process. But since the weather can be unpredictable at times, you want to make sure there’s zero risk of frost or ice before getting too eager. When the temperature remains consistent around 20 degrees, this is the time to open.

Start the Filter and Pump to Prevent Algae Growth

Even though it’s still too cold to jump in the water, it’s an optimal time for mildew and algae to grow. If the temperature warms up and the water is stagnant, it can create an environment for algae to thrive in, especially when there’s sunlight filtering in. This can create a mess with algae stains in and around the pool which will add a lot more work for you to clean. Getting the pump and filter up and running now will help keep your pool clean, algae-free and ready to use once it’s nice and hot out.

Prevent Pollen

Pollen can also be a problem for the pool as the spring weather arrives. Since there is a lot of pollen floating around as the trees and plants spring back to life, it can easily land in the pool. As it does, it will promote even more algae growth. Pollen can also build up a yellow scum, add a greenish tint to the water, and clog up the filters. Even when you start up the pool, make sure to clean it out daily to remove pollen and prevent any build-up.

Make Sure the Water Is Safe for Swimming

No matter when you decide to open your pool, the most important thing is to make sure the water is safe to swim in. Inspect all of the equipment to make sure it’s operating properly and double-check that you’re adding the correct ratio to balance the chemicals in the water.

Prepare the Poolscape

May is a perfect time to get out and start prepping your poolscape too. Wash down your patio furniture, pool toys, get out the slide and organize your layout. Once that’s done, focus on cleaning and raking up the debris and mess left over from the winter. Then it’s just a matter of preparing your garden beds for planting.
